F.A.Q.
Prerequisites
Q: Do I need to have an art background or artistic skill for these programmes?
A: No. Although helpful, students do not need to have an education or experience in art.
Q: If I completed my schooling in a different country is this adequate?
A: Yes and no. If your education was completed at an English speaking institution this will suffice. If it was not completed at an English speaking institution the diploma or transcript must be translated and we will require proof of English programs or competencies. Otherwise you can take the online equivalency test (at no cost to you).
Classroom & Curriculum
Q: How much of these programmes are hands-on?
A: Each programme, aside from the seminars, are completely hands on from the very first day.
Q: Can I take continuing education classes while enrolled in one of these programmes?
A: Yes. Students are more than welcome to register for continuing education classes as long as space is available.
Q: If I have taken some of your continuing education classes do they count as credits towards the programme and will I receive a reduction in the program fee?
A: We cannot offer students advance standing or credits if they have completed some of our continuing education classes nor will we be able to reduce the course fees.
Q: Are the programmes graded?
A: Yes. Students are required to complete in-class assignments, multiple choice tests and a final practical and final written exam. A passing grade of 70% or higher must be achieved in order to receive the certificate.
Q: Will I need to bake at home and will there be any homework?
A: All baking will be done in the class and homework is minimal and usually consists of finding sources of inspiration for a particular class or sketching design ideas.
Q: Will I be able to take home what I make in class?
A: Yes!
Uniform & Equipment
Q: What is included in the uniform and equipment fee? Will I need to buy any additional supplies?
A: Each student will receive 2 chef’s jackets, 1 chef’s hat and all the tools and equipment needed to complete the program. On occasion a student may need to purchase additional items depending on their individual projects.
Q: If I have my own tools can I use those instead? Can I opt out of purchasing the school tools?
A: Students are required to use the tools provided for them but are welcome to bring in additional decorating and design tools if desired.
Q: Can I keep the equipment and uniform?
A: Yes.
Registration
Q: How do I register for this program?
A: Students may do so in person if this is a viable option by making an appointment with the school. The registration process will take approximately 45 minutes to complete and students will be required to bring a copy of their high school diploma or equivalent and 2 pieces of government issued I.D. (one containing a picture).
We can also email you the registration package with complete instructions.
Program Fee, Funding & Payment
Q: How can I pay for this program and what is the fee structure?
A: Acceptable methods of payment include Mastercard, Visa, debit, cash, certified cheques or money orders. Personal cheques and bank transfers are not accepted.
A $500 deposit is required upon receipt of the completed registration package and supporting documents. The balance is due on the first day of class.
Q: Do you accept OSAP or offer any funding?
A: OSAP only provides funding to programmes that are a minimum of 20 hours a week for 13 weeks and have been running for a minimum of 2 years. Unfortunately our programmes do not fit these requirements. The school does not offer funding at this time. Organizations such as Second Career base their funding decisions on the applicant and not the program so a student must contact them for more information.
Q: Will I receive a tax receipt for the cost of this program?
A: Tax receipts are issued annually, prior to February 28th. Only one tax receipt will be issued to each student who has paid tuition fees within the previous fiscal year, up to the end of December.
After You Graduate
Q: Do you help students with placements?
A: Although we do not have an official placement program we are always receiving requests from local bakeries and cake designers/shops looking for interns and employees. We share such requests with the students of this program. We are also able to write a letter of reference or be a reference if needed.
